Alice loved Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and here’s why

Alice
Alice

Do you like this new picture of me? If you do, I can say I have the least role to play. It’s the hair, wind in my hair, make-up, light, photographer, post-processing, etc. I’m making a point here. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is not a great film. But as a product, as an experience, it’s amazing and so much fun.

I watched Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani earlier today with the team I currently work with. And we were having a conversation en route, the crux of which was as long as you can articulate why you do/don’t like a film, we have an ear. But if you want to wash your hands off at “I hate the film”, “I love the film”, your statement is short of an opinion.

I’m often asked what it is like to critique a film and I respond with ‘It’s fun as long as the film moves me in some way or the other.’

My observations on this film follow:

Deepika and Ranbir in YJHD
Deepika and Ranbir in YJHD

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are really good-looking people. Ranbir is a natural when it comes to acting topped with full-throttle charm. Deepika’s acting has consistently improved with every film. They fit the characters they are essaying in the film. Media has ensured you know of their personal equation. When something happens between them on-screen, you feel it too. You’re so connected. Their characters are clearly etched out. You know what to expect and there is enough room to be thrown off. Brownie points to writer-director Ayan Mukerji.

The music is a hit in the true sense of the word. There’s a song for every mood. It’s easy to listen to and relate to as well. I was sold on Badtameez Dil. As my colleague puts it, it’s like when we started watching Glee just for the songs. 🙂

If you watched Anupama Chopra’s interview with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Ayan Mukerji, they addressed some very important issues every filmmaker faces. “Picture mein conflict kya hai?” Also, it’s the 21st century, is parental opposition a factor in modern, urban relationships? What worked for me was the portrayal of relationships. A romantic relationship, friendship among school buddies, our relationships with our parents, the difference between platonic girl-girl and boy-boy relationships. I want best friends like Avi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) but I also want Naina (Deepika Padukone) to be my maid of honour. I want my parents to understand that my dreams are as important to me as my career and I might want the two to marry.

And finally, a change of heart is an experience few are fortunate to have. Acting on it is tough but the reward is sweet.

In short, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani encapsulates modern times, covered in gloss and trying to find depth on the inside.

P.S. – Look out for the cameos/special appearances. They’re truly wonderful. If you have already watched the film, I’m dying to talk about it some more. If you haven’t yet, let me know what you thought when you do.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani | Alice’s thoughts

So, on my day off yesterday, I attended the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani trailer launch and press conference.

Have you watched the trailer yet?

I don’t know what new this film is going to offer. But it seems like a fun summer flick! I’m definitely going to watch, also because I love Ranbir Kapoor. 😛

The press conference was fun, with a lot of journos asking questions about Ranbir-Deepika’s relationship, their tattoos, etc. Ranbir Kapoor, of course, knew the right things to say and came to everyone’s defence. Karan Johar obviously knew this was going to happen and played along, interrupting and diverting questions back to the film at the right moments.

It’s just a good outing when there’s a Ranbir sighting involved and a topping of Aditya Roy Kapur.

So, what do you think of the trailer? Doesn’t the last line serve as a good teaser? Are you excited to watch the film? Waiting to know.

Can’t wait for Rockstar! Concert pics and Saadda Haq tees until then

How hot is Ranbir Kapoor as a rockstar?! Last evening, him and A R Rahman and Mohit Chauhan and team Rockstar performed a concert to promote the movie. I thought Ranbir Kapoor was droolworthy. Don’t you agree?

My favourites from the album are: Jo Bhi Main, Saada Haq, Katiya Karun and Tum Ho. That makes up a big chunk of the album but such is A R Rahman music. Which is your favourite track?

If you’re hooked on to Saada Haq. The song has that quality, doesn’t it? You might be interested in these Saadda Haq tees the Loose Ends store is stocking. Ranbir Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali were both spotted wearing them at Ranbir Kapoor’s surprise birthday bash.

Want Ranbir Kapoor to style your hair?

So, I was cleaning my mailbox today. I had to pay heed to the warning sign in the fear of losing incoming mail. And I came across these super pictures. There are always benefits to cleaning. For instance, if you have just spring cleaned, you can write in to me (alicewandering25[at]gmail[dot]com) with details of items you’re planning to toss out and be a part of our upcoming yard sale.

Good summer hair?

Meanwhile, the hot summer has descended upon us. If I know one thing for sure, it’s long locks and summer don’t gel. I was accompanying a friend to the salon and my hairstylist decided to snip the length off my hair. Hence, I am currently sporting a sorta bob with a heavy fringe.

Aalim Hakim and Ranbir Kapoor

While I wish Ranbir Kapoor was the one styling my hair, you may read the news. Turns out Ranbir surprises his friend Aalim Hakim by dropping in at his hair academy and even testing his skill on one of the students.

Wake up and look at the t-shirt

It is quite literally what I did this morning.

I logged on to a blog I discovered in the tweeple jury list of nominees: The Bombay Talkies. Check it out: http://thebombaytalkies.blogspot.com

She had put up a funny, yet detailed post on the many shirts of Sid (Ranbir Kapoor in Wake Up Sid). It read:

“Over the course of the year Wake Up Sid has become one of my favorite movies.  It’s not convoluted or contrived or overly sappy, it doesn’t try to hard to be cool, there’s no faux-badassness or celebrity vanity showing through.  It’s just a sweet, simple story about two people and the lives they make for themselves.

It helps that Ranbir Kapoor’s more than a pretty face–the boy can act.

What else can he do, you ask?

He can wear a freaking t-shirt.  And seeing as how the production team went to great lengths to feature him in every version of “pop culturally-relevant graphic t-shirt” known to man, I feel it’s only appropriate to ogle…erm, observe him in a few of them.”

We ALL loved his t-shirts, didn’t we? I had people in office asking me to do a shopping special on cartoon t-shirts. (I did, btw) I immediately got on the bandwagon of praises for WUS, wrote an extensive column and spoke with the costume designers.
