We Are Family is the official remake of Hollywood film, Stepmom (1998). Hence, the comparisons to the original are inevitable. Fans of Stepmom may not like the adaptation.
The subject is mature and not exactly something Indian sensibility would easily warm up to. Therefore, it had to be dealt with sensitively. That aspect has been taken care of to quite an extent.
The advantage the film has is that it’s a Dharma Productions product. Karan Johar has always packaged his films well and this one has definitely created a buzz.
The actors, Kajol and Kareena look good and deliver even better performances. The mother-daughter sequences are emotion jerking. Carry tissues because you may just cry. Arjun Rampal and the children deliver great performances. Diya Sonecha (Anjali) is really adorable.
The locations are beautiful and have been used well. The cinematography is fresh.
The music is average. Although the Jailhouse Rock remix hasn’t exactly got a good reception. It works, given the situation in the film but Elvis Presley fans aren’t exactly going to be proud.
The first half is better than the second simply because it becomes too melodramatic towards the end.
Critically, it’s not more than a 2 1/2 * film. Having said that, the audience likes an A-starrer film and prefers to pay for a film with good production value. Those factors shall highly work in its favour.
